General Guidelines

  • Both DOI and URL are included as hyperlinks. Use "http" or "https", just make it consistent
  • Ask your faculty which format to use: the plain text (black not underlined) or the word-processing (blue underlined)
  • Do not include "Retrieved from" or "Accessed from" before the DOI and URL
  • Do not add a period after the DOI and URL
  • It is acceptable to shorted long DOIs and URLs

When to Include DOIs and URLs

  • Always include a DOI regardless if the work is online or print
  • If both DOI and URL are included, only use the DOI
  • If there is an URL but no DOI:
    • If the work is a website: use the URL (make sure it works)
    • If the work is online and it is from a database: reference like a print work
    • For works in databases available only in that database (for example UpToDate or ERIC) include the name of the database and the work's number. Example: Long, J. (2019). Children and development. Education, 13(1), 80-98. Retrieved from ERIC. (ED1234567).

DOI

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique number that provides a persistent link to scholarly information.

The format for the DOI is always https://doi.org/10. and then other numbers/letters

Example: Reiter, K. (2014). A  look at best practices for patient education in outpatient spine surgery. AORN Journal, 99(3), 376-384. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.aorn.2014.01.008

When the DOI has extra information

The format for the DOI is always https://doi.org/10. and then other numbers/letters

If the DOI has extra letters/numbers, simply delete them.

Example: https://doi.org.proxy.sru.klnpa.org/10.1037/dev30098

Delete the extra information: https://doi.org.proxy.sru.klnpa.org/10.1037/dev30098

This is what you will use: https://doi.org/10.1037/dev30098

How to find the DOI

  • In articles, look at the first page of the PDF
  • In online books, look at the Copyright page
  • Check CrossRef. Use the "Search Metadata" tab
  • Ask a Librarian

What to do if there is no DOI

If an online/print article in a scholarly journal, magazine, newspaper do not have a DOI end the citation with the page number and a period.

Example: Jones, M. (1989). The fashion of the cape: Comics and attires. Journal of Fashion, 34(3), 50-65.
