Information about tables and figures begins on page 196 of the APA Manual.
- Tables are numerical values or text displayed in rows and columns (think quantitative).
- A Figure is any illustration (chart, graph, photograph, artwork, drawing, map...) other than a table.
GENERAL GUIDELINES
Numbering
- The numbers for tables/figures are sequential. Ex.: Table 1, Table 2
- Each table/figure must be referred to in the text, using a capital letter (Table, Figure). Ex.: as shown in Figure 1
- The Table/Figure number appears on top of the title
Titles
- The title that describes the Table/Figure is below the Table/Figure number
- The title is in italics and with major words capitalized, no period
Note
- The Note is directly below the table, with the word Note in italics with a period. Ex.: Note.
- Explain abbreviations, symbols, etc
- Acknowledge the source of the table
- Include a copyright statement
