Bias-Free Language guidelines are covered in Chapter 5 (pg. 131) of the APA Manual. Examples:

Examples of Bias-Free Language

The sample consisted of 100 homosexuals

The sample consisted of 100 gay male

The sample consisted of 50 gay male and 50 gender-fluid pansexual people

Six participants are married

Six participants are married and living together 

Five participants are married and living together, one participant living with a partner

Elderly people Older adults, older people, persons over 65 years and older
Physically challenged Disabled person, person with a mental illness, child with a congenital disability
Person who is deaf/blind Deaf/Blind person
Drug/Alcoholic addict Person with substance/alcohol use disorder
The participants were Caucasian/Latinos The participants were White/ from Central America with 50 from Honduras and 65 from Ecuador
Minority  Underrepresented people/groups
