ROCK Voices

Website/online presentation of the ROCK Voices Oral history project conducted by Slippery Rock University.

Terry Steele

Terry S. Steele (born 1947), devoted nearly 33 years of service to the Slippery Rock University Music Department. His early years saw its metamorphosis from a non-degree conferring institution tucked away in West Hall to a fully-fledged program housed in the newly built Swope Music Building.

Between his acceptance in 1975 and retirement in 2008, Steele oversaw the consistent, incremental growth in his own department and the University at large as both gained recognition. Some of his fondest memories of his tenure include hosting a series of world-renowned jazz musicians like Stanley Turrentine and taking his student jazz ensemble on a tour of the former USSR a mere three months before its collapse.
