Paper Formatting

These elements are the same for the Author-Date Style and the Notes and Bibliography Style.

Formatting

  • 8 1/2 x 11 paper.
  • 1-inch border all around.
  • Font: Times New Roman font, size 12.
  • Double-space the whole paper including the References List.

Title Page

  • Write the title 1/3 of the way down the first page.
  • The title is centered, bold, in Title Case.
  • The font size can be 2-3 points larger than the main text.
  • The font used in the title is the same as in the rest of the paper.
  • Do not write a page number or running head.
  • Several lines after the title, include your first name, last name, course, due date, or other information requested by your professor.
  • The whole Title Page is double-spaced.

First Page

  • In the upper right corner, in the header, begin the paper with the number 1.
  • Center the title Introduction in bold at the top of the first page, centered.
  • Do not use a period after the title.
  • The whole paper is double-spaced with the exception of block quotations, table elements, and appendices' lists.

Page Numbers

Page numbers can be placed in any of these locations. Select one and be consistent. Ask your professor if you are not sure.

  • Centered in the footer
  • Centered in the header
  • Flush right in the header

Spacing

Double-space all text except for

  • Block quotations
  • Table titles and figure captions
  • Lists in appendices

Single-spaced elements with a blank line in between items

  • Footnotes or endnotes
  • Bibliographies or reference lists
  • Table of contents, list of figures
