Marjorie Stephenson - Photo Provided by SRU ArchivesMarjorie Stephenson, a professor and librarian at Slippery Rock University from 1971 to 1978, provided in her will for undergraduate scholarships at the university. Her original wishes were to give priority to female African-American Library Science majors. However as SRU no longer offers this major, applications from students in other disciplines may apply. Female students of color with majors in the arts, humanities, social sciences and education will receive highest consideration. Others may also apply. Financial need will be a consideration.

An essay entitled How My College Education Will Help Me Pursue My Career Goals is required. The essay should be one to two pages in length and include campus and community activities and an indication of financial need.

Two letters of recommendation from SRU faculty members are also required. At least one of the recommendations must be from a professor with whom the student has taken a class.

The number of scholarships awarded will depend on available funds as well as the qualifications of the applicants. The maximum award will be $1,000; partial awards may be granted.
